What are LED Video Walls?
LED Video walls (also called video walls or LED walls) are a type of display that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs). These screens can be used for indoor and outdoor events as the main display in a general session to digital signage throughout a venue.

LED walls are a great way to showcase videos, slideshows, and other visuals at your event. LED walls offer a crisp image with vibrant colors. Since LEDs react quickly and draw less power, you don’t need to worry about lagging or ghosting during fast-paced video playback.
Things to Know about LED Video Walls
Compared to projection, video walls provide a higher level of detail and clarity. LED video walls are also modular. Video walls are constructed using small LED tiles or panels (when talking to an AV expert, you’ll hear those terms used interchangeably). They are typically 500mm x 500mm in size (about 20” x 20”). This allows LED walls to be built to different sizes to fit different spaces or produce creative display options, like an ultra-wide screen.
A measurement you will hear used by your AV provider is “pixel pitch”. This refers to the space between the LEDs. This measurement is in millimeters. This measurement is important because it determines the minimum viewing distance. If you look at an LED wall inside the minimum viewing distance, you can see the individual pixels (the picture above is a good example of being able to see the individual pixels)
The formula to calculate viewing distance is: The pixel pitch x 8.3 = Minimum Viewing Distance (in ft)
One of the video wall tiles that we really like is the Infield DB 2.6 Pro. The pixel pitch is 2.6mm. The equation to find the minimum viewing distance for this tile is:
2.6mm x 8.3 = ~21′ 6”

Tips for Planning Your Next Event With an LED Video Wall
When it comes to using video walls for your event, it’s essential to communicate with your audio-visual production provider as much information as possible (this is good practice regardless of if you’re using a video wall or not). Below are a few key details to communicate with your provider:
- Determine screen size and aspect ratio. A lot of details are dependent on the screen size and aspect ratio. Talking through the objectives and feel you want your event to have will allow your AV provider to present the best solution for your event.
- Know your budget. LED walls are more expensive than projector screens, but the production quality is a tremendous jump. You will also need to hire an LED Engineer along with a Video Engineer. Being open about your budget can allow multiple solutions to be presented to you within specific price points.
- Determine if the LED wall will be flown (rigged) or ground-supported. Backend details change for your AV provider depending on what is chosen. Both flown and ground-supported solutions look great and exceed the production quality of other display solutions.
- Know what you want to use your video wall for. As mentioned above, knowing your viewing distance ensures the proper panels are used to your wall looks its best.
